Flooding Crisis In The Midwest

The transition from Winter to Spring in the Midwest is causing major floods due to melting snowpacks and heavy rains. These natural occurrences are causing flooding in several states, leading to thousands of citizens evacuating and five states have declared this an official state emergency.

Many communities are cut off from outside help due to the flooding. In the previous week, these states were hit with a snow storm with conditions similar to hurricanes referred to as “bomb cyclones.” These bomb cyclones hit the Central Plains and the Rocky Mountains last week, with conditions showering snow and freezing rain.

The White House is maintaining contact with the devastated states and the president described the floods as “devastating.” The Wisconsin Governor, Tony Evers, said in a statement, “Warm temperatures and rain the last few days have caused much of the heavy snowpack and ice to melt resulting in flooding, ice jams, and rivers and creeks to rise.”

As of now, two men are missing and three died from flood-related accidents. Residents of Bartless and Thurman were orders to evacuate after the levees breached on Sunday. Iowa and Nebraska were hit the hardest by the flooding with the Missouri River reaching record high water levels.
