And, in what may be a thumb in the eye to Russian President Vladimir Putin over his crackdown on gay rights, three of Obama’s delegates are openly gay.

Brian Boitano, the former Olympic figure skating gold medalist came out after being selected to head up the U.S. delegation.

Former tennis star, and openly gay athlete, Billie Jean King will also be in the U.S. delegation to the Winter Olympics in Sochi. She was awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.

Two-time Olympic medalist and openly gay hockey player Caitlin Cahow will also be a member of the U.S delegation.

Obama Not Attending

Many speculate whether or not Putin’s stance is the very reason that President Obama and the first lady will not be attending the games.

These games will mark the first time since 2000 that the U.S has not sent either the President or first lady.
