Every Donut Helps
Residents of a town outside of California, have united with shopping at one specific donut shop and have been visiting in droves to make sure the owner sells out of products early, so the owner can get away and spend as much time as possible with his sick wife.
Stella and John Chhan have been running Donut City in Seal Beach, Orange County, for three decades now and are open every day of the week, or at least, until their stock for the day runs out. However, recently it has just been John behind the counter every day selling their stock. His wife suffered a debilitating aneurysm several weeks ago.
Eventually, their regular customers started to notice that Stella wasn’t there every day like normal and were shocked to learn of her predicament and wanted to help in any way they could. Luckily, there was a way to help. And it’s a win/win situation for everyone concerned.
Regular customer Dawn Caviola told The Orange County Register: “Days went by and I just couldn’t get it out of my head. So, I thought, if enough people buy a dozen doughnuts every morning, he could close early and go be with his wife.”
Everyone gets their donuts and John gets to be with Stella earlier in the day. Dawn then posted her idea onto a local networking website, and the idea took off. Since then, John has been sold out completely by noon most days. That means he can get away to the rehab clinic where his wife is continuing her recovery.
John told local news outlets: “She can talk, she can write. Right now, she’s trying to start to eat something.” One regular customer said: “We have watched them work extremely hard to keep their doors open and support their family.
“We will always support them, even more so in their time of need.”
