Trump Isn’t Exonerated
The usually camera-shy Robert Mueller broke his silence this week to clarify the findings of the Mueller Report, the report summarizing two years of investigation into Russian collusion in the 2016 election. Mueller said the report did not “exonerate” President Donald Trump, but only found there were no grounds to charge him with a crime.
Sitting presidents ordinarily cannot be charged with a crime, as Mueller reminded the public during his press conference.
Mueller said his report speaks for itself, and that his office is officially closing. He will be returning to private life. He implied that it’s up to Congressional Democrats to decide what to do with the report’s conclusions–including going forward with impeachment proceedings. Mueller said that there was “insufficient evidence” that Trump participated in a conspiracy to sway the election. He did, however, suggest the President lied and obstructed justice.
“The matters we investigated were of paramount importance. When the subject of an investigation obstructs that investigation or lies to investigators it strikes at the government’s effort to find the truth and hold wrongdoers accountable,” Mueller said.
Some Democrats, including presidential candidate Cory Booker, called on the party to impeach the President. But President Trump’s reaction to the press conference was gleeful.
“The Greatest Presidential Harassment in history. After spending $40,000,000 over two dark years, with unlimited access, people, resources and cooperation, highly conflicted Robert Mueller would have brought charges, if he had ANYTHING, but there were no charges to bring!” Trump tweeted.
