It was in 2009 when the original Ghostbusters director and producer, Ivan Reitman, made an announcement during the popular movie’s 25th Anniversary Blu-Ray Premier that the time was right for production of Ghostbusters 3 to begin. Now, nearly four years later, after a multitude of rumors and false hope, fans may want to start getting excited. With Bill Murray finally losing his rights to the Ghostbusters franchise, the third installment of one of the most beloved movies ever produced may finally be a reality.

Sony Picture Rumors

The rumors for a 2014 production date began after an unnamed Sony Pictures Entertainment executive informed an NBC affiliate in Cleveland, Ohio, that the city of Cleveland was chosen as Ghostbusters 3’s shooting location. The unnamed executive went on to tell NBC affiliates that the movie would begin production in 2014 with some A-list stars already in the works to star in the upcoming film including Emma Stone and Jonah Hill.

Story Plot Already Created

The talks of a third installment of Ghostbusters have been in the works for years with a story plot already created for the film. Costar and co-writer of the popular Ghostbuster franchise, Dan Aykroyd, has already described the script as centering on new ghostbusters coming to Columbia University to solve a series of issues associated with new research being done in particle physics. The Ghostbusters 3 script was drafted from a previously written version created by writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky. With rumors that Stone and Hill will be among some of the new ghostbusters, fans can expect a humorous production.

Who Will Produce and Star in the New Installment?

Rumors still have the original Ghostbuster’s director, Reitman, signed on to take on production of the third installment. Rumors of Ghostbusters 3 look more promising every day. The latest news from the unnamed executive coincide with rumors from last May when Aykroyd announced he was meeting with Reitman in June to discuss the third movie.

Rumors of Stone and Hill joining the cast though don’t seem as fruitful. Stone has recently signed on to play the lead female role in a number of upcoming Amazing Spider-Man movies. For her to also star in the third Ghostbusters film, the scheduling of the two movies would have to align perfectly. As for Hill, he seems to be focusing his acting career on accepting roles that showcase him as a serious dramatic actor. His role in Ghostbusters would turn him back onto the comedian audience. While rumors are flying that he has agreed to take on the role, there are also those that predict he would turn it down unless he was alongside a truly A-list star.

With all that aside though, no matter who plays the new ghostbusters, after years of waiting for a third installment it seems more and more likely every day that fans won’t have to wait much longer. Although nothing has been confirmed by Columbia Pictures, with the recent rumors on production happening in Cleveland and with the recent talk of directors getting together with producers, it seems like the long awaiting sequel may finally be here. Despite who plays who or what script the final movie ends up producing, for all Ghostbusters fans this third installment has been long overdue.
