The Trekkies Rejoice

After a new Star Trek series, starring fan favorite Patrick Stewart, was announced over the summer, much speculation was made into what the show would entail. While details about the show are still under wraps, a few small details surrounding the show has emerged since this summer. The series was announced by Stewart himself at Star Trek Las Vegas, a convention and gathering of fans, and the reaction was overwhelmingly positive.

Stewart played the beloved character Jean-Luc Picard in the Star Trek: The Next Generation television series and subsequent films. Picard, captain of the iconic Enterprise, is one of the most revered characters in the numerous television shows and Star Trek media.

The science fiction powerhouse that is Star Trek has spanned from the original series in the 1960s, to the 80s, 90s, and the more recent times, garnering both financial and critical success. The last time Picard appeared on screens was roughly 20 years ago, so many believe that the series will take place 20 years in the future from when we last saw the captain, but it is unknown currently if the writers will take the show in a different direction.

The most recent announcement related to the new show is a comic series tying into the other shows that will focus on Picard 20 years before The Next Generation. Stewart tweeted a photo showing writers involved in the series with Stewart in September. The show will air on CBS all-access, most likely in 2019.
