The 2018 MLS regular season is over, but who were the big winners and losers on Decision Day?
Decision Day Sunday saw the final ten games in the season players, with two play-off spots up for grabs. The spots ultimately went in the direction of Real Salt Lake and the Columbus Crew in West and East respectively.
The biggest losers of the day were LA Galaxy and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Galaxy went into the final round of games knowing that a draw would be enough for the play-off spot. However, despite leading 2-0 against Houston Dynamos, they ultimately lost 3-2. Allowing Salt Lake to sneak into the next round.
As for the Eastern section, Columbus Crew were the big winners, under the stewardship of potential next USA head coach Gregg Berhalter. Ex Galaxy player Gyasi Zarades was the hero, as he scored his first career hat-trick to edge his side to a 3-2 win over Minnesota United.
The New York Red Bulls finished the season with the leagues best record, to win the Supporters’ Shield. They did this by leaping over Atlanta United on the final day. A goal from Derrick Etienne was enough for the New York side to get their win over Orlando. This combined with Atlanta’s capitulation over last seasons’ winners Toronto in a surprising scoreline of 4-1, ensured the shield was heading to New York.
The knockout round for the play-off’s in now set. Let battle commence.
