The Daily Telegraphs Apologizes To US First Lady For Publishing False Claims

The Daily Telegraph has apologized and paid “substantial damages” to Melania Trump after publishing an article containing false statements. On Saturday, the paper apologized “unreservedly” for the content of a cover story published on January 19 in its weekly magazine supplement.

“As a mark of our regret we have agreed to pay Trump substantial damages as well as her legal costs,” The Daily Telegraph said. It said it falsely characterized Trump’s father’s personality and that he “was not a fearsome presence and did not control the family”.

The paper also retracted the claim that the 48-year-old’s modelling career was unsuccessful before she met Donald Trump.

“Trump was not struggling in her modelling career before she met her husband, and she did not advance in her career due to the assistance of her husband,” it added.

It also accepted that the article wrongly claimed that her parents and sister relocated to New York in 2005 to live in buildings owned by Trump. “We apologize unreservedly to The First Lady and her family for any embarrassment caused by our publication of these allegations,” it continued.

The Slovene-born US First Lady worked as a fashion model through agencies in Milan and Paris before moving to New York in 1996. She first met Trump at a party in 1998 and the pair married in 2005.
