Republic Of Korea Is Open
A liaison office on the border of North and South Korea has been opened, a step towards peace between the two nations that once seemed impossible. While relations between both countries have been tense since the Korean War was halted with an armistice treaty in 1953, this new development appears to be another step towards reconciliation and goodwill for the two countries, which have never officially declared peace.
The liaison office is meant to open regular communications between the two countries, which have often cut contact, leading to a more than a few near conflicts. Staff will live on site at the office and be available for talks 24 hours a day. Hopefully, this will improve inter-Korean relations, and both countries will be able to meet face to face.
North Korea, officially called the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, has historically been withdrawn and often belligerent to its neighbors in the south, and South Korea has stayed fully prepared to reengage their adversaries to the north. North Korea has been accused of massive human rights violations, and is run by a dictatorial government. But, the opening of communications may be a step towards helping the people of North Korea improve their lives by allowing the country to open itself up to the world.
While both South Korea and the US have seemingly made massive strides in opening communications with the north this year, South Korea, officially known as the Republic of Korea, has had more luck in the past few months, as a recent meeting between the US and Korea was cancelled at the last minute. Earlier this year, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in an historic summit. Another summit held in Singapore earlier this year saw the first meeting of the leaders of both North Korea and the USA, with Donald Trump meeting Kim Jong-un.
