Jim Carrey’s new show ‘Kidding’ premiered in September on Showtime. After a slow start, the show now averages 3.3 million viewers on every episode across all of CBS’ channels. The first season hasn’t even concluded yet, but reception has been positive enough to prompt its renewal for a second season.
‘Kidding’ stars Carrey as children’s TV entertainer Mr. Pickles who, despite his happy and wholesome persona, is experiencing a slew of traumatic events in his personal life. These include the death of one of Mr. Pickles’ two sons, a failing marriage, and constant pressure from his boss/father to maintain the show’s quality and income.
While Carrey has had a long and storied film career, ‘Kidding’ has been his first major television role since ‘In Living Color’ in the 90s. Showtime’s president of programming, Gary Levine, said “Kidding has established itself as one of the most endearing and inventive shows on television.
I feel like I have been watching Mr. Pickles my whole life, and I look forward to being entranced by his unique blend of hilarity and heartbreak in Season 2.” The first season of ‘Kidding’ is set to wrap in November, and the second season will begin some time in 2019.
