Nancy Pelosi confirms her party is launching an official impeachment inquiry against Trump

On Tuesday evening, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, the highest-ranking Democrat in the House, announced her party was launching an official impeachment inquiry against President Trump. Pelosi made the announcement after a whistleblower reported a phone call between Trump and Ukrainian officials, in which Trump allegedly threatened to withhold military aid until the Ukrainians provided him with dirt on presidential candidate Joe Biden.

“Last Tuesday, we observed the anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution on September 17th. Sadly, on that day, the Intelligence Community Inspector General formally notified the Congress that the administration was forbidding him from turning over a whistleblower complaint on Constitution Day,” Pelosi said. “This is a violation of the law. Shortly thereafter, press reports began to break of a phone call by the President of the United States, calling upon a foreign power to intervene in his election. This is a breach of his constitutional responsibilities…Therefore today, I’m announcing the House of Representatives moving forward with an official impeachment inquiry.”

Trump has offered to release transcripts of the phone call with Ukraine. Trump has said it was a “very nice” phone call and denies pressuring Ukrainian officials in any way.

“There has been no President in the history of our Country who has been treated so badly as I have,” Trump tweeted on Tuesday night. “The Democrats are frozen with hatred and fear. They get nothing done. This should never be allowed to happen to another President. Witch Hunt!”
