Remembering The Lost Live In Gilroy Shooting

On Monday, night, hundreds of local residents attended a vigil for the victims of a mass shooting at the Garlic Festival in Gilroy, California over the weekend. Three people–a 6-year-old boy, a 13-year-old girl, and a man in his 20s–were killed in the shooting.

On the night of the vigil, California Governor Gavin Newsom visited wounded victims in the hospital. He also took to Twitter to urge Congress to do something about gun violence in America.

“Today, I met with a 12-year-old who was shot while in a bounce house. A grandmother mourning the loss of her 6-year-old grandson,” Newsom wrote on Twitter. “This is America today — the shootings continue. Loved ones are buried. Children are gunned down. And Congress does nothing.”

The shooter, 19-year-old Santino William Legan, was shot and killed by police during his rampage. He apparently purchased the gun he used, an SKS-style rifle, legally in Nevada on July 9th. Legan’s motives are unclear. However, when someone asked him in the midst of the shooting, “Why are you doing this?” Legan allegedly replied, “Because I’m really angry.”

Legan’s social media posts suggest he might have had ties to the white supremacist movement and other extremist movements.
