Fisherman Rescues Whale

Footage has emerged of the moment when a hero eel fisherman jumped to the rescue, to save the life of a humpback whale.

The fisherman, named only as Sam, dives onto the back of the gigantic sea creature and cuts it free from a load of fishing lines that it had become tangled in. It is an enthralling video.

Sam and his crew were en route back to land after completing their commercial fishing trip off the coast of California when they spotted the huge animal struggling underneath the water.

Sam’s friend and co-worker Nicholas, who had filmed the dramatic video said: “We were coming in from fishing and there was a white buoy that was wrapped around the whale’s tail. He was like, splashing on the water’s surface.”

They tried to save the creature for ages, over three hours to be precise. Then Sam decided to jump into the water and finish the job by cutting the whale loose from the line and let the animal back into the wild where it belongs.

The crew had actually seen the large animal from a distance away, but they were unsure what kind of animal it was. Once the boat was a little closer, they knew it was a whale and that they had to help it. Instead of standing around, they called the coast guard immediately and got to work by trying to untie the animal.

However, after two hours, it was clear that the coast guard wasn’t going to come out. Nicholas continued: “That’s when we decided to get Sam in the water. He jumped in, was able to crawl up his back and right then that whale fluke almost hit the phone out of my hand.”

It wasn’t without luck that they was able to get the animal free, Nicholas continued: “This is going to sound super crazy. But when the coastguard told us there was nothing else we could do. I turned up the volume really loud on the radio and yelled at the whale and told him to listen, and no one else was coming for him, and we are his only hope, and he better lay still. And this is going to sound super crazy, but he did.”

Incredible effort from the fisherman, going above and beyond to save one of the seas most loved animals.
