Tesla To Premiere Self-Driving Ride-Sharing Service
Tesla CEO Elon Musk is known for his grandiosity. True to form, he announced at Tesla’s Autonomy Investor Day that the company would have one million self-driving robotaxis on the road by next year.
“I feel very confident predicting autonomous robotaxis for Tesla next year,” Musk said. He conceded they wouldn’t be available “in all jurisdictions, because we won’t have regulatory approval everywhere, but I am confident we will have at least regulatory approval somewhere, literally next year…all you need to do is improve the software.”
Some criticized the timeline, calling it unrealistic. Musk begs to differ.
“We’ll be operating robotaxis next year with no one in them. Sometimes I am not on time, but I get it done,” Musk said at Autonomy Investor Day, which took place in Palo Alto, California, on Monday.
At the conference, Musk also predicted that within two years, Tesla would be manufacturing cars that don’t require steering or braking. The billionaire also envisioned a future where people send their cars to run errands and make deliveries for them, allowing owners to make money from home. Again, some people were skeptical and took to Twitter to question Musk about the logistics.
“It’s hard to wrap my head around a future where my car might be earning me money through autonomous driving while I’m asleep in my bed or play video games but here we are,” professional gamer Marcel Feldkamp tweeted at Musk. Musk replied, “That’s exactly the idea. What’s not well understood is that Tesla cars being made *today* will be able to do that for you. Just a matter of finishing the software & going through regulatory approval.”
Showing true confidence in his product, Musk also said on Monday it’s “insane” for people to consider buying a car other than a Tesla.
