Disney Is Rolling In The Big Bucks

Disney is smashing box office records with a string of hit films, including “Aladdin,” “The Lion King,” and “Toy Story 4,” which have all reached the $1 billion mark in revenue in the past year.

More grown-up films “Avengers: Endgame” and “Captain Marvel” have also taken in more than a billion dollars. Overall, Disney films have grossed $8 billion this year.

“It’s hard to call it surprising at this point because we’ve long expected this to be the crowning year of Disney’s theatrical buildup, but that doesn’t make it any less impressive,” Shawn Robbins, an analyst for boxoffice.com, said. “When all’s said and done, counting ‘Rise of Skywalker’ and ‘Frozen II,’ they’ll probably have seven films from 2019 reach that milestone…It’s an unprecedented achievement that speaks to how well Disney has understood and embraced its expansive audience in recent years.”

Disney’s live-action remakes of its classic animated films have been especially lucrative. Disney is planning to release two more–“The Little Mermaid” and “Sleeping Beauty–in 2020.

“Disney has unprecedented brand horsepower with Pixar, LucasFilm, Marvel and the other Disney film divisions bringing to bear a slate of films that in 2019 has proven to be unstoppable at multiplexes around the world,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.
