Recovering From The Recent Earthquake In California

Southern California residents are preparing themselves for more aftershocks in the wake of a 7.1 magnitude earthquake over the Fourth of July weekend. The earthquake was the strongest California has experienced in almost two decades and resulted in fires and building damage. One of the hardest-hit communities was the city of Ridgecrest, California.

The U.S. Geological Survey says California has actually been experiencing thousands of small aftershocks, averaging one per minute. However, many of these aftershocks were too small to be noticeable to humans. But they warn that major aftershocks could affect the region in the coming days.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said he had requested disaster aid from President Trump, and he believes Trump will come through.

“There’s no doubt in my mind after talking with the president, he’s committed to the long haul, the long run, to help support the rebuilding efforts. We don’t agree on everything,” Newsom said. “But one area where there’s no politics, where we’ve worked extraordinarily well together is on emergency response, recovery and increasing emergency preparedness, and this is consistent with the relationship.”

So far, no deaths have been reported in the series of earthquakes and aftershocks. But Southern California remains on high alert, and the California National Guard is preparing to help the public if more aftershocks strike.
