Trump isn’t happy about losing his Christian support
Last week, Christianity Today, the leading evangelical publication in the country, published an editorial supporting President Trump’s removal from office. After backlash from Republicans and right-wing Christian leaders, the magazine is reaffirming its position.
The original editorial asserted that Trump not only engaged in criminal conduct when he ordered Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden, but that he is morally unfit for office.
“He has hired and fired a number of people who are now convicted criminals,” Christianity Today wrote. “He himself has admitted to immoral actions in business and his relationship with women, about which he remains proud. His Twitter feed alone—with its habitual string of mischaracterizations, lies, and slanders—is a near perfect example of a human being who is morally lost and confused.”
Amid backlash, the magazine published a second editorial, urging Christians to reconsider their “unconditional loyalty” to the President.
“With profound love and respect, we ask our brothers and sisters in Christ to consider whether they have given to Caesar what belongs only to God: their unconditional loyalty,” the editors wrote.
Other Christian leaders have disavowed the magazine, which was founded by evangelical leader Billy Graham. Jerry Falwell Jr., the son of the prominent Christian leader, blasted the magazine in a column for FOX News.
“Although Christians have never had a better champion in the White House than President Trump, a so-called Christian media outlet is using its platform to echo the radical, progressive left in demanding his removal from office, stalking the Internet like a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” Falwell wrote. “Christianity Today took to its editorial page last week to condemn President Trump and call for his ouster following the hyper-partisan impeachment sham led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and the loony Democrats in Congress. It’s one of the most self-righteous and hypocritical editorials ever written.”
