Man Awakes After Comatose State For 12 Years
A man left with quadriplegia following an accident has woken up after 12 years in a coma. Wang Shubao, who is cared for by his 75-year-old mom in China, woke up to see tears streaming down her face.
Elderly Wei Mingying has cared for her son for over a decade and has spent all her savings on Wang’s medical expenses – even taking on a 120,000 Yuan debt ($17,000). The loving mum told reporters that at one stage she was so poor she didn’t eat for a whole month. Wang was 36 when he was involved in a car accident in Shouguang in Shandong province back in 2006.
Wang’s dad passed away when he was young which left his mum to become his sole carer. Wei’s day would start as early as 5 am – she would wash her son’s face before bathing, feeding and massaging him, finishing by re-positioning his body to prevent bedsores.
Wei told Beijing News: “There was a time when I wouldn’t eat for an entire month because we were so poor. My mouth, my tongue was all dry. I would just drink water.” Wei lost nearly 44 pounds over the years and now weighs only 66 pounds.
Last October a miracle occurred when she caught her son smiling at her one day, a sign that he had finally regained consciousness. Although Wang is still unable to move or speak, he can now hear his mother and smile in response to what she does.
She added: “I am just overjoyed. I hope he will make a full recovery. I will never give up on him. I hope he can call me ‘mum’ again one day.” Back in July, Liverpool supporter Sean Cox also regained consciousness after falling into a coma, following a brutal attack.
Sean was caught up in the unprovoked attack and was left in critical condition in the run-up to Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final against AS Roma on April 24.
A statement on the Electric.ie website reads: “Sean has regained consciousness and is undergoing dedicated rehabilitation. Recovery is progressing positively but very slowly. “His colleagues in Precision Cables are overwhelmed by the support and good wishes for Sean and his family that they receive on a daily basis. They would like once again to ask that you keep him in your prayers and that he will continue on his road to recovery.”
