People aren’t in love with the new ‘Cats’

When the trailer for Cats, the live-action version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s long-running musical, was released over the summer, social media went wild. Some fans were thrilled to see stars like Jason Derulo, Taylor Swift, and Rebel Wilson transformed into felines with never-before-used CGI technology. Others called the trailer “creepy” and “unsettling.”

Now that Cats is out in theaters, it’s receiving mixed reviews from audiences. Four reporters from The Huffington Post saw the movie this week and confirmed the film was indeed a unique experience.

“This is the movie the keeps on giving, at least in theory,” HuffPo reporter Matthew Jacobs wrote. “We get digital fur, Taylor Swift as a tabby jiggling her humanlike boobs and a character who somehow unzips herself from a full-body pelt to reveal she is wearing clothes underneath…What seems to have worked as a kooky wink for a theater audience is now, well, anything but.”

“I usually can find some fun in a bad movie,” Erin Evans said. “But this was just bad. I was confused the whole time. I think the first thing out of my mouth after seeing it was, ‘What even is a jellicle cat anyway?’ I’m blaming this all on T.S. Eliot. I’ll save my ire for a few of these performances and looks for later in this chat.”

Audiences nationwide seem to agree with the reporters’ skeptical reviews: Cats, so far, has only a one-star rating on Rotten Tomatoes, out of 129 reviews.
