Broncos Welcome Flacco For New Quarterbacks

John Elway is apparently going to keep chasing quarterbacks until he finds the right one. John, pack a lunch. This will take a while.

After picking up a cast-off Peyton Manning and winning a Super Bowl, the former Denver Broncos great has vainly sought a successor. If at first you don’t succeed …

The Broncos on Wednesday agreed to acquire Joe Flacco from the Baltimore Ravens. There doesn’t appear to be much tread left on the 34-year-old’s tires, but desperation rules.

Just last year, the Broncos picked up Case Keenum in free agency. Not a smash hit. And the road to Keenum was paved with such flops as Brock Osweiler (two stints), Trevor Simeian, Paxton Lynch (a first-round pick) and Chad Kelly.

A Hall of Fame QB who won two Super Bowls, Elway’s legacy will never be equaled in Denver. And his acumen as an evaluator of talent at his old position will not win him any awards.

Flacco became available with the emergence of Lamar Jackson. A No. 1 choice last spring, Jackson is everything Flacco isn’t — mobile, young, easy on the payroll and the type of QB most teams now want. Flacco is the o!d-fashioned model.

Flacco will be good for the Broncos as a veteran presence. But he is not the solution to Denver’s lingering problem. He is no John Elway.
