Where does creativity come from? What about innovation? In some cases, creativity arises out of necessity or struggle. We know to try new strategies or construct new tools to be able to achieve a goal or overcome an obstacle.

Certainly, creativity can come from inspiration. Leonardo da Vinci must have been inspired by Lisa Gherardini, just like billions of artists are inspired to paint or create something every day.

An interesting finding by psychologist John Eastwood is that boredom is what has led to so much creativity and innovation in the world. Boredom, and humans’ nifty ways of figuring out how to avoid it, was an important part of evolution.

It is what constantly draws us to what is new or unseen or unheard or undone. So, next time you are bored, think of it as an opportunity to do something amazing.
