It Started With SZA Visiting A Sephora

Today, all Sephora stores will be closed for an hour for diversity training. The call for training came after the singer SZA said she was racially profiled at a store in California. During the incident, Sephora employees called security to ensure SZA wasn’t stealing.

SZA wrote about the incident to her millions of social media followers, prompting Sephora to respond.

“Hi, SZA. We’re sorry to hear about your experience at our Calabasas store and appreciate you bringing this to our attention,” Sephora tweeted. “We want to let you know we take complaints like this very seriously and are actively working with our teams to address the situation immediately.”

After SZA’s experience at Sephora, comedian Leslie Jones said she sent her makeup artist to a different California Sephora store, and had a similarly disappointing experience.

“I sent my makeup artist @LolasBeautyMark and my best friends wife to @Sephora 2103 Broadway store. she needed makeup and to learn how to apply,” Jones tweeted. “my makeup artist just called in tears of how bad they treated her and my friends wife!! The salesperson and manager. SO NO MORE SEPHORA.”

Sephora has 16,000 employees worldwide, and Sephora announced that all employees would be required to undergo training to help them understand the company’s values.
