Mars One was started by Dutch researcher Bans Lansdorp, and is described on their website as a sort of scientific exploration crossed with a reality television media event where viewers will be “able to watch and help with decisions.”
The Dutch non-profit company promises to start a human colony on Mars by 2025.
200,000 people worldwide have applied and Mars One has picked suppliers to build a lander and a satellite for the mission.
While many people have doubts about the possible success of this mission, the attempt does mark a shift in space travel as we race toward Mars.
