The Nintendo Switch has only been in circulation for a little under two years, and yet it has already become the fastest-selling console in both Japan and the United States. And now, it has already surpassed Sony’s very own flagship gaming console, the Playstation 4, in Japan for its December sales. It sold over 120,000 units in Japan in the first week of December alone, while the other consoles, including the PS4, have less than 40,000 combined.

According to Media Create, The Switch is predicted to sell a total of over 17.3 million units as opposed to the PS4’s 17.1 million. The margin is pretty thin, admittedly, but it’s still a hefty achievement for Nintendo. This is the first time in ten years that Nintendo will be deemed as the “better” console than its longtime rival. PlayStations have always outsold most of Nintendo’s consoles, starting from the Wii.

In addition to this, Nintendo Switch games have also been selling like hotcakes, both in Japan and in the international market. In the United States, ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate,’ which was just released this December 2018, managed to sell over 3 million units in just 11 days.

The battle isn’t over yet for Nintendo though, as Sony’s home consoles are still leading as a whole, with roughly 84% of household consoles either PS4 or PS4 Pro.
