CEOs For Diversity And Inclusion

A new coalition for CEO Action Diversity and Inclusion is the largest business coalition committed to advancing cultural diversity in the work place. This program gives the opportunity for employees to talk to the CEO of their company to express their opinion on how the workplace can be improved.

They discuss the challenges that employees face in the modern work place and ways to overcome them with the help of company programs or benefits. The VP of Citigroup, Farjana Rohman, explains how this program can help by sharing her own experience of diversity in the workplace.

Rohman’s family came from Bangladesh and grew up in Queens. As a child she admired the beautiful buildings in Manhattan but didn’t realize that she would later pursue her career in the same buildings. In the beginning of her career she said that she would feel out of place in her building because of their pristine condition.

Rohman says that she also felt out of place in a restaurant setting with her co-workers since she grew up eating traditional Indian dishes with her hand and the restaurant had many utensils she was not familiar with. There is little diversity in the finance sector with many coming from an affluent background with Ivy league school education, making Rohman feel more like a fish out of water.

She also reflect on how she had to assimilate with American culture by learning body language such as eye contact and hand gestures. Rohman had doubts of pursuing this career path and attributes her perseverance to her supportive managers.

The development of this new coalition hopes to bring cultures together for a truly better workplace that can benefit everyone. Check out the video above for more of Farjana Rohman’s story and how CEOs are doing their part to ensure all employees a better workplace.
