In June of 2017, the Russian border service quietly installed nine new border signs to go along with the 230 that already exist in the Georgian territory of South Ossetia. And as you can imagine for many the move sparked a massive protest as Georgians see it as a threat. However, for the Russians it is a tactic that they often use for control over territory.
This border really is only considered to exist by three nations as of 2008. It’s hard and a major issue because Russia is putting these borders where ever they think their territory is and many people are losing access to their own land. Georgians really think this is illegal and the locals in the last year have lost not only land, but kids in certain areas can’t go to school and people can’t visit their own families.
And it doesn’t end there. These border restrictions aren’t just about putting up signs. They also place barbed wire along the fences, set up border guard stations, and set in place surveillance cameras. For more details be sure to check out the video above.
